Though Professor Gibson passed away unexpectedly just a few days ago, he will live in our hearts forever.
He taught some of the most challenging subjects at ASA, including Statistics and Physics. However, he would have absolutely disagreed with the word “challenging”. He often told me that there was no reason why all students could not excel at math. Which is to say, he believed in our students and was never deterred by their initial reluctance in taking his classes. Time and again, he succeed. He was able to bring the world of mathematics to students who had never seen themselves as math scholars. His classes, and the confidence with which they endowed students, changed the trajectories of many lives. His students knew their odds, and also knew they would be successful nevertheless.

Welcome to the 2020 Summer Semester! All of you are probably a bit apprehensive, concerned, or even scared. You are not alone. We all are. We are indeed living in extraordinarily challenging times. I sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are continuing to successfully navigate and adapt to the new norms.
