MEDICAL ASSISTING

ASA College’s Medical Assistant Program is designed for individuals considering a career in healthcare as a medical assistant or within the other disciplines of healthcare services.

The Medical Assistant curriculum provides strong educational foundation for career growth. Students receive primary training in anatomy, physiology, medical emergencies, microbiology, pharmacology, and psychology. Our program focuses on teaching essential medical terminology, patient scheduling, medical billing and coding, clinical assistance, medical law and ethics.

Students also study healthcare administration, which encompasses topics like insurance practices, requirements, regulations and how to ensure proper reimbursement for services. Professors for all clinical courses are licensed medical doctors (MDs).

Graduates of our Medical Assistant Program are trained to be proficient in preparing medical documents, reports and capable of performing duties both the front office and examining room of any healthcare facility.

PROGRAM GOALS

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate should possess the competencies and knowledge required to function successfully as an entry-level medical assistant by demonstrating the ability to:

  • Apply knowledge of and commitment to the practice of medical assisting that reflects ethical industry standards and follows the guidelines of program accreditation.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and other medical professionals as a healthcare team member.
  • Describe and discuss professional ethics and legal issues as they apply to the medical assisting profession, including knowledge of the Medical Assisting Code of Ethics and HIPAA regulations.
  • Correctly perform clinical and administrative procedures typical to an entry level Medical Assistant.
  • Prepare for one or more industry standard certification exams

CAREER OUTLOOK

Listed as one of the Top 25 Fastest Growing Occupations in New York State, the Department of Labor estimated a 31% growth of Certified Medical Assistants between 2010-2030 in response to the rise in demand of trained medical personnel.

A medical assistant is an integral part of the health care team. The clinical responsibilities of a Medical Assistant include taking medical histories, recording vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting physicians during examinations. They may also perform basic procedures on the premises such as: drawing blood, administering injections, and performing electrocardiograms (EKGs) on physician’s behalf.

More so, the medical assistant is often required to manage administrative tasks such as: updating and filing patient records, handling insurance forms and correspondence, scheduling appointments, and assisting with billing and bookkeeping.

Graduates of our Medical Assisting Program are provided a solid educational foundation to make the transition to a Bachelor’s degree program in Allied Health disciplines effortless. As an Institution accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), credits earned at ASA College may be transferred to any other accredited institution.
